Scarecrow Festival in Trenton

Crafts, free entertainment, art, carnival rides, a popular dog costume contest and, of course, scarecrow building all return Oct. 4-6, 2013 for family fun

Kick the back-to-school blues and enjoy all the fun things fall has to offer at the 12th annual Scarecrow Festival in Trenton, happening Oct. 4-6, 2013 in the downtown area of this downriver city. A range of activities will be in full swing during the following hours:

  • 6-10:30 p.m. Friday
  • 10 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Saturday
  • 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.

To celebrate the spooky season, groups can enjoy psychic readings and a ghost hunt at Trenton's Grand Hotel – with the help of the GHS Paranormal Research team based in Farmington Hills.

Prefer classic, less-creepy fun? Families can take part in arts and crafts and a petting farm on Saturday and Sunday. You'll also find a rock-climbing wall, inflatables and games for toddlers on Sunday – in addition to a classic hearse car club display and the always-popular dog costume contest (that's at 1 p.m. Sunday – grab a seat early, and be sure to fill out an application form, available on the event's official website, if you want to get Fido involved).

There also will be carnival rides and games open all three days. Wristbands to participate run $15 on Friday and $17 on Saturday and Sunday.

For grown-ups, visit the Octoberfest craft beer tasting event under the tent at Round House BBQ on Friday and Saturday. Tickets to this event are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Cost includes seven beer-tasting tickets and a food ticket. There'll also be music – and the baseball game will be broadcast on a big screen.

You could even meet a new addition to your family, as the Lake Erie Metro Animal Rescue and the Trenton/Woodhaven animal shelter will be onsite with adoptable cats and dogs.

Entertainment includes the Scarecrow Idol singing contest beginning on Friday at 6 p.m., as well as a battle of the bands at 7 p.m. Sunday. In addition, catch performances by local bands including Detroit Soul Men, Jeff Hoagland Blues Band and The Viceroys.
