Take your tots for small scares or let your teens head to a hair-raising 2013 Halloween event in Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties

The leaves are crisp, the air is chilly – and the ghosts and goblins are back to give you a scare! Haunted houses, frightening hayrides and corn mazes are the talk of the town every Halloween season. And, whether you have wide-eyed little ones or droll adolescents, there's an attraction somewhere in metro Detroit to make 'em smile (or scream). Here are some spooky lures near you – and a couple family-friendly events suitable for smaller children.

Witch Hayride at Apple Charlie's Apple Orchard

  • Address: 38035 S. Huron Road, New Boston
  • Phone: 734-753-9380
  • Schedule 2013: rides start at 4:30 p.m., last weekend of September-Halloween (call for extended schedule the week of Halloween)
  • Cost: $5

This scare-free hayride for little kids (2 and older) takes you on a pleasant autumn journey out to a bonfire, where you can eat a doughnut and sip some cider.

Barn of Horrors and Spooky Fun Barn at Erwin Orchards

Young ones can wander through a corn maze and get rewarded with cider and a doughnut or roam through a harmlessly spooky barn. Older kids who want a better scare can wait until nighttime, when they are "stalked" by monsters through the corn maze. There's also a barn of horrors with scary creatures to make you scream – and state-of-the-art robotics, special effects and illusions.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in October, the barnyard transforms into a creepy landscape of fortunetellers, a dark cornfield maze and twisted fun house. The strobe-light hayride drives through acres of monsters and ghouls. Then try to find your way through the three-level haunted barn and mysterious black hole. Not for young kids.
