The Ugly Duckling by Wild Swan Theater in Ann Arbor

The classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale of a homely animal that turns into a beautiful swan plays on stage Oct. 17-19, 2013 in a special kids' show.

Quack, quack! The Ugly Duckling is coming to Wild Swan Theater in Ann Arbor Oct. 17-19, 2013. Resident playwright Jeff Duncan is adding his own twist to the classic coming-of-age children's tale.

This time-honored story centers on an unattractive little bird who's scoffed at and ignored by all the other critters in the barnyard. But the joke's ultimately on them: As we know, that little duck grows up to be the loveliest winged creature in town!

With its lively productions performed by award-winning professional actors, dancers and musicians, it's no wonder Wild Swan Theater is a favorite of parents and teachers alike. In fact, it touts being "the only professional theater that's dedicated to young people in Michigan," and has been putting on shows for over 30 years.

Children with special needs are also welcome at these shows. Wild Swan's trained American Sign Language performers bring the dialogue to life for children with hearing disabilities. And its "Dramatically Able" program also focuses on making theater accessible to little ones with various challenges.

Bring the entire family for this stage experience. Catered to grades pre-K-2, this delightful show takes place at the Towsley Auditorium on the campus of Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor.

Show times are as follows:

  • Thursday, Oct. 17: 10 a.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 18: 10 a.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 18: 1 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 19: 11 a.m.

Individual ticket prices are $8 per child or senior and $12 per adult. To learn more about the October 2013 Wild Swan Theater production of The Ugly Duckling, be sure to swing by the Metro Parent calendar listing.
