Michigan's Harvest at Lorenzo Cultural Center

This Clinton Township spot gives families a look at farming a la Michigan in a special fall 2011 exhibit with lots of kids programs

Sweet corn. Crunchy apples. Fresh asparagus. The Mitten State grows 'em all! And, from Sept. 24 to Nov. 20, 2011, families can have fun exploring our state's rich agricultural heritage in new exhibit Michigan's Harvest: Food, Farming and Community, hitting the Lorenzo Cultural Center in Clinton Township.

This exhibit yields a big crop of kids programs – which are free of charge. Children see how to plant a seed and watch it grow, make art with food, get hands-on with gadgets and gear from the 19th and 20th century farm eras, learn about life in lumber camps – and make healthy food choices, like taking home a batch of trail mix they whip up themselves. Besides working with lima beans, grains and dried fruit, they can also meet a goat and sheep.

Parents, meanwhile, can pick up ways to look at food differently and even examine culinary tourism, without leaving the kitchen. Plus, you'll get tips on protecting your family against potentially hazardous foods.

The programs start in October and require registration. But you can explore the exhibit sooner: It's open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays, and 1-4 p.m. Sundays. See the Metro Parent listing for more information about the Michigan's Harvest: Food, Farming and Community exhibit at Lorenzo Cultural Center in Clinton Township!
