Victorian Festival in Northville

Take a step back in time at this 25th annual fair that brings back some truly old-fashioned fun, from games to entertainment. It goes Sept. 13-15, 2013.

Do you or your kids ever wonder what it would be like to live in another era? For one weekend, downtown Northville sets its time machine back some 150 years or so for its annual Victorian Festival, which runs Sept. 13-15, 2013. This year highlights the gold-rush era!

The fair kicks off with an annual parade at 6:30 p.m. With that, it's officially time-warp time: Streets are closed to car traffic as townspeople, artists and business owners jump back in time, with ladies in pagoda sleeves and petticoats and gentlemen sporting breeches and top hats.

Besides a plethora of period costumes, the transformation also is complete with story tellers, magicians, strolling musical entertainment and demonstrations all drumming up the art, history and romance of the 1800s.

Little knickerbockers get in on the fun, too: Bring your tykes to Ryde Park for some fun rides. There are old-fashioned games they can give a whirl, too.

Need to wet your whistle, mom and dad? The Victorian Saloon is a perfect way for the parents to enjoy their night out. There's also plenty of food and family entertainment in store.

Highlights include a Victorian tea and fashion show on Saturday. There is no cost for general admission. The festival hours are as follows:

  • Friday: 5:30-10:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
