Best Places for Great Maternity Clothes

When you're expecting – and expanding – it's the perfect excuse to shop! Here are 10 places in metro Detroit to pick up some great pregnancy pieces

Your belly's expanding and you're pushing past the waistband of your favorite jeans. But the bright side to outgrowing your wardrobe goes beyond your bundle of joy. You've got the perfect excuse to buy new clothes! Whether you want to channel Kate Middleton's ladylike look, the bohemian chic of Matthew McConaughey's wife Camila, or the over-the-top choices of Kim Kardashian, you have every right to treat yourself to some key pieces that will make you a style star through every trimester. Here's a look at some of the top picks for great maternity shopping in metro Detroit and beyond:

1. Bella Belli

Indie maternity boutiques have come and gone, but only one has stood the test of time. Bella Belli celebrates its 10th birthday this year – and maintains its reputation as the area's top shop for expectant moms. Maternity style has changed over the past decade, with modern customers steering away from gimmicky slogan T-shirts, bold prints and overly trendy designs. Popular today, according to manager Elizabeth Fielder, are simple garments in solid colors that can be worn over and over again. Check out ruched wrap dresses by Isabella Oliver, basics by Bella Band and Michael Stars Ts. 790 N. Old Woodward Ave., Birmingham, 248-203-2220.

2. Destination Maternity/A Pea in a Pod

You might not be able to afford a whole new wardrobe from these high-end stores, but if you're going to splurge on a few investment pieces, this is the place. You'll find a great selection of designer jeans here – and Secret Fit Belly waistbands are so comfortable you'll live in them throughout your pregnancy, bringing the PPU (price-per-use) down to a justifiable level. Find A Pea in the Pod boutiques inside Macy's at Twelve Oaks (Novi), Oakland (Troy) and Lakeside (Sterling Heights) malls. Destination Maternity is at The Somerset Collection in Troy, Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor.

3. Motherhood Maternity

This chain store has a solid selection of maternity must-haves in every category – with mid-range prices. Look for Jessica Simpson Maternity and Loved by Heidi Klum, as well as Motherhood's new Bump Start collection with prices starting at $12.98. You'll also find a wide selection of plus-sizes. Motherhood Maternity has locations at most major malls in metro Detroit, as well as discount stores at Birch Run Premium Outlets and Tanger Outlets in Howell.

4. Gap/Old Navy

Planning a babymoon? If you and your hubby have booked one last getaway before your due date, stop here to pick up a few maxi dresses for the road. These stores, owned by the same parent company, are also great for fun staples like colorful jeggings, tunics, tanks and tees.

5. Target

Liz Lange for Target remains a perennial favorite for moms-to-be. Shop early for the coming season or you'll miss out as new arrivals get picked over quickly. While you're there, register for your baby shower and do some browsing in the baby, toy, house wares and grocery departments.

6. Slightly Pregnant

If you want high-fashion finds at consignment prices, turn to this Royal Oak treasure. The entire store is devoted to maternity wear. Budget some time to go through the racks and you'll find plenty of gems – many with the tags still on. 32172 Woodward Ave., Royal Oak, 248-549-2229.

7. AJ's Attic

This retail consignment shop carries maternity wear as well as baby and children's clothing. You'll find affordable clothing, accessories and baby gear here. 34794 Warren Road, Westland, 734-326-2571.

8. Sweet Repeatz Boutique

Maternity must-haves from office wear to party dresses can be found here, but this unique consignment store's offerings surpass brand name labels. Owner Gia Peterson caters to moms' every need with a wide variety of new and used gifts and supplies. Peterson also loves to share referrals for unique local services like belly painting and baby concierges. 42991 Seven Mile Road, Northville, 248-347-1943.

9. Baby Baby Plus More

A whole room here is devoted to maternity wear! Owner Lourdes Weidl says the category makes for good consigning. "Maternity clothing is mostly in very good condition, since it's only worn for a couple months," she says. "It looks like new." Once you've earned your "push" present, you can bring your maternity clothes back and get 50 percent off the price of everything that sells. 153 E. Main St., Northville, 248-347-2229.

10. Mom-to-mom sales

Of course, it's always great to get hand-me-downs from other stylish moms, but if your BFF already gave away her maternity clothes, don't despair. You can find gently used garments at mom-to-mom sales throughout metro Detroit.
