Halloween Hoot at Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve in Rochester

Costumes? Check. Bags for candy? Check. If your family is already geared up and prepared to celebrate Halloween, head to this year's Halloween Hoot at Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve in Rochester for some not-too-spooky holiday fun Oct. 24-26, 2014 (be sure to register in advance – more on that in a minute).

"When families first arrive, they come to our campfire out front," says Rita Becker, Dinosaur Hill's administrative assistant. Here, families will find entertainment, too.

Then, every 10 minutes, volunteers gather groups to take an autumn walk along Dinosaur Hill's trail, which is aglow with candlelight. Along the way, you'll see a variety of short skits featuring family-friendly storytellers and actors.

"They are designed to be funny and entertaining," Becker says, "not scary."

And don't forget to bring a bag for collecting Halloween treats. There will be goodies passed out as you go.

At the end of the walk, attendees can grab some season-appropriate snacks – cider and doughnuts. The night is sure to be a "hoot" for the whole family.

Dates and times for the 2014 Halloween Hoot are as follows:

  • Friday, Oct. 24: 6:20-8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 25: 6:20-8:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, Oct. 26: 5:30-7 p.m.

Tickets are $7/person. Tickets must be purchased in advance for this event, so Becker advises families to call or email Dinosaur Hill (find that contact information in our Halloween Hoot calendar listing) to reserve tickets. Tickets are for designated time slots.

The whole shebang lasts approximately an hour. Be prepared for the outdoors, too. Becker says "costumes are great" and that "most of the kids do wear costumes," but she reminds parents, "they are walking on a trail, which is not paved – and we do line it with luminaries." So be careful with long or draping materials, and wear appropriate shoes.

She also says families should dress for the weather, since the event runs rain or shine.
