“The façade of the museum is decorated using trimmings inspired by 15th-century Italian sculptor Luca della Robbia,” Kate Morland, The Henry Ford Museum manager says, “who was known for his brightly colored enameled terra cotta pieces that were often surrounded by garlands of fruit and foliage.”

The 600-ton Allegheny locomotive greets guests with a hearty “Merry Christmas!” And there’s no shortage of trains for locomotive enthusiasts. Wintry model trains chug through a mid-20th century Detroit display with engines and decorations galore.

The marvelous 25-foot tree returns, this year decked out in shades of gold and more than 500 ornaments that relate to the museum’s collections, including cars, locomotives, airplanes and traditional adornments.

But it’s not all for show. Children have many hands-on opportunities, including putting parts on a 1917 Model T, taking a job on Henry’s assembly line, tinkering with Legos and Lincoln Logs and building Knex racers.

Get your wish lists ready, Santa’s stopping in at the museum 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Keep in mind that weekday afternoons are generally the best times to visit St. Nick, and he takes lunch breaks to feed the reindeer.

The exhibit is free with regular admission, which costs $18 for seniors ages 62-plus, $20 for adults ages 13-61, $15 for youth ages 5-12 and is free for children ages 4 and under. Parking is $6 per vehicle. Admission and parking are free for members.
