Family Bike Events and Fun in Southeast Michigan


Biking is old-school fun – and, frankly, it's on a roll in metro Detroit. Whether you've learned how to navigate your community's bike lanes or prefer two- (or three- or four-) wheeling it around your neighborhood or down a local trail, there are plenty of opportunities to get some exercise, enjoy the warm weather and, of course, spend a little family time together. We breezed around the region to find a few fun bike-centered events happening in summer of 2014 we think you'll dig. Don't forget the helmets!

Saturday in the Park on Hines Drive in Westland

Whether you'd like to bike, walk or skate, you can literally do it in the middle of the road – safely! – at this annual summer event, where Hines Drive is closed down to traffic for six miles.

Family Rides at Willow Metropark in New Boston

Designed to include kids of all ability levels, these weekly rides, hosted by Programs to Educate all Cyclists, include two loops (the first about four miles at an even pace; the second, if you choose, is a bit more hilly). Favorites include a mid-July "Ice Cream Ride" and "Spooky Rides" in October.

Kiwanis Children's Cycling Clinic in Downtown Mount Clemens

This fun day includes a bike obstacle course, tune-ups, a decoration station, face painting, parade with Rosco the Clown, bike giveaway (two for girls and two for boys), goody bags (while supplies last) and free bike helmets for kids ages 3-10.

Bike Rodeo at Novi Civic Center Campus

As part of its celebration of National Bike Month, Novi offers this event for kids ages 5-12. Kids meet members of the local police department and visit stations for bike inspections, "start and stops" and "Rock Dodge," too. Children take home a prize. Bring bike and helmet.

Bike Night in Downtown Ferndale

This event is geared at inspiring everyone to ride their bikes to town. Kids can bring their helmets for a free adjustment, and little Ferndalians can get a bike license from the city's police. (A bike ride, geared at adults, departs from the Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop, 163 N. Nine Mile Road.)

Bike Safety Day at Drake Sports Park in West Bloomfield

This event for kids ages 3-12 includes bike inspections, free bike helmets (first 350 children), bike helmet sizing, a three-station bike safety course, fun giveaways, chance to meet a police officer and a "frozen treat" for completing a bike safety course.

Kids are welcome to this bicycle safety check and riding skills test where they're even fitted properly with new helmets. Ferndale residents get free bike licenses, too. Be sure to take a fire safety house tour.

The Kiwanis Club of Utica-Shelby Township pulls out the stops for this 26th annual, including prizes for best decorated bikes, helmet giveaways (while supplies last), educational/safety experiences led by Shelby's police and fire crew, food and plenty of fun.

Bike PATH: Pedaling Toward Health at Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township

Motor City Bike Ride at Belle Isle Park in Detroit

This event includes a family bike ride, along with casual and "athletes" rides – plus a barbecue, children's activities and a DJ. Sponsored by Danialle Karmanos Work it Out; proceeds benefit this Detroit nonprofit, which focuses on a yoga-based approach to reducing kids anxiety and obesity and boosting self esteem.

Bike safety is actually just one part of this fun five-day (Monday-Friday) summer "camp" just for ages 5-7. They'll also explore fire safety, seat belt safety and explore loads of safety-related activities and crafts.

Birmingham Bike Festival at Shain Park

This day of racing and fun includes categories for kids ages 10-14 and 15-18, plus a variety of options for adults. There's also a free "Kids Race" for those up to age 14 where every racer gets a prize. Also features a bike parade for children with disabilities and a kids fair with games, prizes and a bounce house.
