In a state where you're never more than six miles from a body of water, you'll also find lots and lots of boats. To celebrate Michigan's maritime tradition, families are invited to the fifth annual Boating and Outdoor Festival at the Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township, running Sept. 11-14, 2014.

There are plenty of vessels on display both on land and in water, serving up activities like fishing, skiing, wakeboarding and cruising. Find paddle boats, kayaks, paddleboards and inflatables, too.

Kids can play captain while they drive remote-controlled ships in the RC boat pool. Plus, they can get their faces painted, meet a real mermaid and hop around the bounce houses. Also, be sure to try Waterwalkerz – which gives children the chance to walk on water in a giant, clear plastic bubble "human hamster ball."

Speaking of critters, don't miss this year's new "The Bark Park." It has entertainment by the Rock N Roll K-9's, adoptions, education, agility courses and a puppy play area (times are 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday).

Demonstrations of unusual water vehicles are given, too, including the Flyboard, a single-person apparatus that shoots its wetsuit-donned rider into the air and across the water (times are 11:30 a.m., 1, 2:30, 4 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday; plus 11:30 a.m., 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. Sunday).

Plus see the Quadski, an "amphibian" vehicle that transitions from water to land (demo times are every hour 1:30-6:30 p.m. Friday; 12:15, 1:45, 3:15, 4:45, 5:30 and 6:45 p.m. Saturday; and 12:15, 1:45, 3:15 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday).

The 2014 show times are as follows:

  • Thursday: noon-7:30 p.m.
  • Friday: noon-7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Not to mention, sneak a peek at the "Bat Boat" – a replica commemorating the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie.

Regular admission ticket fees are $10 for adults, while kids ages 12 and under get in free with an adult. Note that there's also vehicle admission fee to the Metropark, which is $7/vehicle per day (or $30 for the year).
