Mount Clemens Art Fair

Creativity for children abounds in downtown Mount Clemens when its annual art fair returns with a bang-up mix of artists, aerialists, puppeteers, crafts-to-go and even some auto action June 1-3, 2012.

Hosted by local creative haven Anton Art Center, this fair, set in the midst of a growing cultural spot, has been going on for over 30 years. Some 8,000 people flocked to Macomb County last year to check it out!

As a fresh new bonus this year, Friday night kicks off in conjunction with the downtown Hot Rod Power Tour, in celebration of the returning Chevrolet Belle Isle Grand Prix, also this weekend. Kids will get a kick out of cruisers' sweet cars dotting the streets 5-10 p.m.

But, of course, the main course is art! And all types of media are represented, including ceramic, painting, photography, jewelry, metalwork and more. Some new additions to watch for? Pyro Glass, which just set up a shop in Mount Clemens; mixed media assemblage artist Patti Pfaendter; and Ryan West, creator of detailed drawings. Many will conduct demos sure to amaze and delight small fair-goers.

And specially for the wee ones? A children's tent houses make-and-take arts and crafts and age-appropriate entertainment. This year, 3D experiences are key – kids will craft wire trees, abstract paper collage and paper bird puppets. And ArtZone features 2D activities, such as perspective drawing a collage. Both areas are free and open to all ages.

Live art is a perennial favorite here, too, over at the Fountain Stage. Keep your eyes peeled for wondrous works of magic, puppetry, acoustic guitar, spoken word – even ballroom dancing and aerial circus arts. You can find the full line-up of events at the Anton Art Center's website.

The art fair happens on Macomb Place between North Walnut Street and Southbound Gratiot Avenue, during the following days and times:

  • Friday: Noon-9 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Sunday: Noon-6 p.m.
