The Plymouth Ice Festival at Kellogg Park

We haven't experienced much snow this season (thankfully!) but the temps are definitely cool! And that's awesome news for the annual Plymouth Ice Festival in downtown Kellogg Park! This granddaddy of great winter events in metro Detroit is back with a chilly gusto, ready to transform tons of giant ice cubes into sub-zero works of art.

Let's start with the icy spectacles. By popular demand, Dueling Chainsaws is back at 7 p.m. Saturday. In this whirlwind faceoff, two ice-carving pros are given 15 minutes, one ice block apiece and chainsaws to sculpt their best creation. Whew! For a slower burn, watch two elements combine as the Fire and Ice Towers light up the sky at 7:30 p.m. (Friday and Saturday), burning bright for about two hours.

Things officially kick off at 7 p.m. Friday with an opening ceremony and ribbon cutting. Carving competitions send the ice flying Saturday and Sunday. Watch local college and university talent create art, live, and vie for individual and team honors. Scope out sculptures 24/7 all three days and beyond (weather permitting).

Kids in tow? Warm up (and burn off some steam) by trying cross-country skiing with skilled professionals at the Cross Country Zone, sponsored by Blue Care Network of Michigan and presented by Plymouth's Sun & Snow Sports. It's open during regular festival hours all three days.

At the Penn Theatre, catch Big Hero 6, showing 7 p.m. Friday, 4:45 and 7 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Seats are only $3. Also, over at the Plymouth Historical Museum, be sure to take advantage of two-for-one admission.

A few other annual faves include a main stage with entertainment and award ceremonies, plenty of festival food from vendors (plus great downtown family restaurants) and the DTE Energy Hot Spot Warming Tent.

Hours for the 2015 Plymouth Ice Festival are as follows:

  • Friday: 3-10 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
  • Sunday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
