The Snow Queen Stage Show at PuppetART Theater in Detroit

Parents and kids will find music, puppets and a positive message in an enchanting fairytale – plus, an opportunity for holiday family fun at PuppetART Detroit Puppet Theater's production of The Snow Queen, running Dec. 1, 2012-Jan. 26, 2013.

The Snow Queen, based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen, is the story of Gerda, who goes on an adventure to rescue her friend Kai from the Snow Queen. The journey to find Kai is full of magic – and a little danger, too.

"It's a classic fairytale about the power of friendship," says Jillian Zylinski, marketing and development associate at PuppetART Theater.

Zylinski says parents should bring their kids out to see the show because it's "visually and musically engaging" with the puppets, and that no matter what age the kids are, they will enjoy those aspects of the show.

"Our set pieces and puppets are larger than life, and the kids are right there," she says of the PuppetART shows in the "intimate" 70-seat theater. "The kids are very close and engaged with actors and puppets."

There is more to do and see at PuppetART before or after the show. Stop by the PuppetART museum to learn about the history of puppetry in Detroit. Or, for $8 per person, kids can head to the puppet-making workshop, Zylinski suggests.

"After each show, kids can make a puppet to take home with them," she says. "That completes the circle for them."

Tickets to The Snow Queen are $10/adults and $5/kids. Dates and times are as follows:

  • 2 p.m. Saturday Dec. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and Jan. 12, 19, 26
  • 10 a.m. Thursday Dec. 20 and Jan. 17
  • 2 p.m. Dec. 26, 27, 28 (additional holiday performances)

PuppetART Theater is now in its 15th season, and each season, anywhere from 7,000 to 10,000 people have come through to enjoy the shows, Zylinski adds.
