Bike Events in Southeast Michigan

Biking is old-school fun – and, frankly, it’s on a roll in metro Detroit. Whether you’ve learned how to navigate your community’s bike lanes or prefer two- (or three- or four-) wheeling it around your neighborhood or down a local trail, there are plenty of opportunities to get some exercise, enjoy the warm weather and, of course, spend a little family time together. We breezed around the region to find a few fun bike-centered events happening in 2015. Take a peek at the roundup – and don’t forget your helmets!

Family Rides at Willow Metropark in New Boston

These weekly rides, hosted by Programs to Educate all Cyclists, are designed to include bikers of all ages and ability levels with two loops; the first about four miles and at an even pace; the second a bit more hilly and challenging. Check ahead for the “Ice Cream Ride” this summer and “Spooky Rides” in the fall.

Saturday in the Park on Hines Drive in Westland

Every Saturday throughout the entire summer, a 6-mile stretch of Hines Drive is closed to traffic so that you can walk, ride or skate down the middle of the road.

Metro Grand Spring Tour at Huron High School

This 32-year-old tour takes riders on routes through Wayne County’s country roads and stops for food along the way. Choose from 25, 50, 75 or 100-mile routes. A pancake breakfast is included.

Kiwanis Children’s Cycling Clinic in Downtown Mount Clemens

This fun day, presented by the Kiwanis Club of Mount Clemens, includes a bike obstacle course and decorating station, bicycle tune-ups, a bike giveaway, face painting, free helmets for kids ages 3-10 and more. There’s even a bike parade with Rosco the Clown.

Bike Rodeo at Novi Civic Center Campus

This celebration of National Bike Month offers fun for kids ages 5-12. Kids will meet members of the Novi Police Department and visit stations for free bike inspections, “start and stops” and “Rock Dodge.” Plus, get a prize to take home. Bring a bike and helmet.

Bike Night in Downtown Ferndale

This event is geared at inspiring everyone to ride their bikes to town. Kids can bring their helmets for a free adjustment, and little Ferndalians can get a bike license from the city’s police. (A bike ride, geared at adults, departs from the Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop, located at 163 N. Nine Mile Road.)

Bike PATH: Pedaling Toward Health at Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township

2015 Michigan Tour de Cure at Washtenaw Community College

This annual event aims to help end diabetes by raising money for diabetes research and education with five races of varying lengths. Arrive at least a half an hour early for check-in.
