Kolobok Puppet Show at PuppetART, Summer Show

Folktales are cultural gems – and Kolobok is no exception. A Russian perspective on The Gingerbread Man, the Kolobok play at PuppetART in Detroit helps kids learn about, and respect, another country's traditions through a familiar story.

The local PuppetART troupe began presenting this show at its Detroit Puppet Theater home back in 1999, and it continues to be its most-performed play. Come see the little dumpling named Kolobok learn his lesson Saturday, July 7, 14, 21 and 28, 2012 and Thursday, July 19, 2012.

As in The Gingerbread Man, a homemade "boy" runs away from home and has to experience life's lessons without the help of those who love him. Unlike the title character of the American folktale, though, Kolobok is able to outsmart the fox and find his way home.

The story is seen through the eyes of two forest creatures Kolobok meets in the magical forest. The bright and colorful play has original music the whole family can enjoy.

"The play leaves room for improvisation," says Alexandre Bleau, in charge of box office operations. "The actors can gear the play towards who is in the audience. This makes the play exciting every time you see it!"

The show starts at 2 p.m. each date. The cost is $5 for kids and $10 for adults.

While you're here, you can also tour the quaint connected puppet museum and check out the studio, where kids learn how to be a puppeteer and create their own dolls after the show (for an extra $8).

PuppetART changes plays every month. The theater holds 70 individuals and provides showings to schools, as well. As a bonus, PuppetART's website offers resources for teachers on how to turn each play into a rich lesson for kids, too.
