Just look around and start to observe all of those beautiful color changes! And, best of all, fall brings some great family fun opportunities for kids and grown-ups. Families are invited to celebrate fall with a trip to the Wilson Barn during the month of October for its annual Pumpkin Fest event. The barn, located in Livonia, will have classic fall activities every day of the week from Oct. 1-30, 2016, says Ken Stempien, president of the Friends of the Barn community group that cares for the historic site. Hours for the Pumpkin Fest are as follows: 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays On weekends, guests can enjoy hayrides, pony rides, a petting zoo and delicious cider and doughnuts for sale. There will also be crafter displays, hot chocolate and plenty of pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks and other fall decor for sale. On the weekdays, pony rides and hayrides are available (weather permitting; call in advance to schedule a weekday hayride). “It’s just a good, fun family event,” Stempien says, pointing out that it gives kids a chance to see ponies and other farm animals they might not usually get to see in the metro area. “We’ve been doing it for 30 years.” For kids who’d like a little fright (but nothing too spooky) the Haunted Barn Stroll might be just right. It’s a haunted stroll through the barn that includes monsters and ghosts. It’s geared toward kids age 12 and younger and visitors can specify to staff how scary (or not scary) they’d like it to be. Dates for the Haunted Barn Stroll are Oct. 8-9, 15-16 and 22-23, 2016. Admission for the haunted stroll is $1 per person. Proceeds from cider and doughnut sales benefit The Friends of the Barn. Wilson Barn is located at the corner of West Chicago and Middle Belt roads. Learn more about the barn here. Admission to Pumpkin Fest is free, however small fees apply for certain activities such as pony rides and hayrides. No dogs are allowed except service dogs.
