Noel Night in Midtown Detroit

Treat yourself to a night filled with cheer and the holiday spirit, Dec. 5, 2015, in Detroit's Midtown district.

More than 70 organizations, museums, shops, restaurants and more come together to open the 43rd annual Noel Night, Dec. 5, 2015, brought to life by the nonprofit organization Midtown Detroit, Inc.

Cultural institutions like the Detroit Institute of Arts, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Michigan Science Center open their doors to the public for the “open house” from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday. There’s food and yuletide treats.

Take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage and participate in some holiday shopping. Create something special at various family craft activity areas. Check out the 200-plus music, theater and dance groups, including Jeffrey Broussard & The Creole Cowboys, Madeleine Peyroux, Imani Winds, the Mosaic Singers and more.

Get your picture taken or a caricature drawn with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Detroit Historical Museum (5:30-8:30 p.m.) Need a lift? Not a problem! There is free shuttle service among venues.

New this year is 8 Degrees of Noel Night. At the front lawn of the Detroit Public Library, adults enjoy craft beer, meads and hard ciders from 8 Degrees Plato Beer Company. Also new this year is Artloft, Will Leather Goods and Kit and Ace.

And oh, did we forget to mention an Ice Scraper Challenge? Happening on Woodward Avenue between Kirby and Farnsworth streets, the challenge features students from Wayne State University and College for Creative Studies, along with the world-class ice sculptor, Ice Guru, collaborating on icy art.

Then, as tradition, the Salvation Army Band leads the community singalong on Woodward Avenue at the end of the festivities. They’re giving out hot chocolate, too!
