Finger foods are kid favorites. So, for your little princess or superstar, why not turn them into something a bit more “sophisticated”? Break out the cocktail napkins and serving platters – it’s time for canapes!
Remember these snacks? The term was popular in the ’70s, but it’s really just a fancy word for appetizers served during the “cocktail hour.” Usually, they featured a small, toasted piece of bread topped with a snazzy spread and a garnish.
Canapes are simple to make – so kids can easily help out. Plus, after they’re finished, kids can invite friends over and host an all-out canape party. (Totally “grownup!”)
Check out our simple pizza canape recipe. For a different alternative, try a cold salad canape (simply go with crustless toasted bread quarters and your favorite tuna, egg or chicken salad; top with a pickle slice or dill spring) – or classic PB&J.
- 1 package of puff pastry, French baguette, or regular sliced bread
- Tomato sauce
- Shredded cheese
- Chopped peppers and/or pineapples (optional)
- Cut your puff pastry, French baguette or bread loaf into small rounds. Or, for a jazzed-up touch, use cookie cutters to cut them in fun shapes, like stars. This will serve as the base for each canape.
- Pop the pieces into a toaster or conventional oven to toast.
- Spread tomato sauce onto each base.
- Sprinkle cheese on top of each, and then place the in the microwave for a few seconds to melt.
- Serve with style! If you choose, deck ‘em out with the chopped peppers, pineapples or other garnishments.
