Caregiver Support Groups in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor

Caring for an aging parent can put some serious stress on a child. These caregiver support groups in metro Detroit and Ann Arbor can help.

When I was around 14 years old, my dad’s mom was diagnosed with dementia. It was a difficult pill to swallow, because my grandmother had always been fiercely independent – but within a year she was seeing and hearing things that weren’t there and required around-the-clock care.

My dad, her eldest son, was granted power of attorney and suddenly became the primary caretaker of an aging parent.

Over the course of seven years, and in addition to caring for his own family, he watched his mom completely deteriorate into a shell of her former self and made decisions that no kid should ever have to make for his mom.

Thing is, he’s not the only one to ever have to do so. In fact, most adult children become part of the “sandwich generation” and will have to care for their aging parent at some point. While it can be rough, you can get through it with a little support.

Start by talking to your family, and then try one of these caregiver support groups in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties. They’ll help you learn how to cope with your new role and provide you with all the information you need, too.

Be sure to check ahead for times and schedules.
