Holiday Break Educational Fun in Macomb County

While the kids are on holiday break from school, there are plenty of opportunities to learn and have fun! Here are places and events to try in Macomb County.

The holidays are hectic, but for kids on holiday break, there are still plenty of lulls in the excitement. While it’s easy to let them fall into the sleep-and-video game habit, we’ve got a better option. Why not take them to one of these Macomb County spots for some educational – and fun! – activities to enjoy as a family?

We’ve rounded up several educational winter activities happening at local libraries, nature centers and more to fill your family’s December 2018 calendar.

The Reptarium Amphibian and Reptile Zoo

Utica’s newest amphibian and reptile zoo is open to the public select days over holiday break. Not only will kids get up-close and personal with some scaly and slimy animals, they’ll learn all about them, too.

Admission is $10 per person and free for kids up to age 3. There are additional fees to feed an alligator and tortoise – or to have your photo taken with a reptile.

Fun with the Public Art Map

Get a little art education while on winter vacation thanks to the digital art map. It will help you navigate your way to all of the coolest local art Macomb County has to offer.

Stony Creek Metropark Nature Center

Stop by the nature center at this Shelby Township park to see live snakes, frogs, turtles and fish, plus check out seasonal and permanent exhibits. Admission is free, but a $10 vehicle entry permit is required.

Wolcott Mill Metropark Farm Center

This 250-acre working farm, located in Ray Township, is closed on Christmas but reopens the next day.

Swing by to see the farm, which is the only public farm in the Michigan to have six heritage breeds of dairy cows, in action. Admission is free, but a $10 vehicle entry permit is required.

Center Line Public Library

Holiday Music Concert at the Chesterfield Township Library

Sterling Heights Nature Center

Parents can enjoy a night out while the kiddos experience all the Sterling Heights Nature Center has to offer. From 6 until 9 p.m. on Dec. 27, 2018, kids can join in nature-related games, take an evening hike (weather permitting) and more. Be sure to register in advance.

Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center

This nature center, which strives to help children develop awareness of the natural world around them, is open to the public from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Dec. 27-29, 2018. Stop by to experience its offerings with your family.

Young Modeler’s Club at the Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society

The club is free to join and meets every Saturday. Stop by on Dec. 29 to build your own model.
