Best High Schools in Michigan? US News & World Report Weighs In

The International Academy of Macomb ranks No. 7 in the nation, the magazine says; learn how the schools were scored and which ones were dubbed the best high schools in Michigan.

Three Michigan high schools are among the top 100 in the country, according to the new 2018 US News & World Report Best High Schools rankings – with the International Academy of Macomb in Clinton Township rated as No. 7. The other top local schools were International Academy in Bloomfield Hills at No. 30 and Washtenaw International High School in Ypsilanti at No. 41.

The US News teamed up with the North Carolina-based RTI International, a global nonprofit social science research firm to come up with the best high schools rankings.

RTI International and US News looked at 28,813 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia that had 12th grade enrollment and sufficient data for analysis. Information from the 2015-16 school year was the main focus.

The ranking method

There was a four step process used to decide the Best High Schools, reports. The first step determined whether each schools’ students were performing better than expected by analyzing scores on state math and reading proficiency tests.

If a school passed that bar, the second step examined whether the least-advantaged students – such as minorities and those from low-income families – performed above the average for similar students within that state.

If a school passed step two, researchers then took a look at a school’s graduation rates, and if a school passed all three of these steps, they then evaluated college-readiness performance using both Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate participation rates.

The 5948 top-scoring schools were rated by US News as gold, silver or bronze. Gold medals were awarded to schools with the highest college readiness index values, and those schools ranked from No. 1 to No. 500.

The silver medal winners were the next group of highest college-readiness schools, and they ranked from No. 501 to No. 2,711. Bronze medals were given to another 3237 high schools that passed the first three steps but did not offer any college-readiness courses or to those that had a college readiness index less than the score needed to receive silver.
