Egg Carton Mini Turtle Craft

This egg carton craft is easy and fun for kids. Get the tutorial here.

During the summer months when boredom starts to kick in, it’s important to have a few good DIY projects on file, and even more important to have some basic craft supplies ready at any crafty moment. When assessing your child’s craft supply stash, take a look at kitchen items that are often sent to the recycling bin: jam jars, plastic take-out containers and even egg cartons. This week’s project upcycles a paper egg carton into a quick-to-craft mini turtle; what other animals could your child turn an egg carton into?

Materials

  • Empty paper egg carton
  • Scissors
  • Paint brushes
  • Craft paints: green and brown
  • White pen
  • Black construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Circle hole punches: 1/4″ and 1/2″ sizes

Instructions

To get started, you’ll need to disassemble your egg carton. Cut off the top of the container and then one egg cup. Trim the egg cup so that it sits flat on the table.

Next, paint the outside of the egg cup with green paint. Let the paint dry.

Once the green paint has dried, create the turtle’s shell by adding brown details. Once again, let this coat of paint dry.

To create the rest of the turtle’s body, punch out four 1/4″ black circles and one 1/2″ black circle with your paper punches. On the 1/2″ circle, add white eyes with your pen.

Assemble the turtle by folding each of the 1/4″ circles in half. Add a small dab of the glue stick to one half of the circles and press into the egg cup. Repeat for the turtle’s head and your upcycled egg carton turtle is ready for action.
