How to Make Emoji Charms for Backpacks

Your child can add extra flair to their bag by making their very own emoji charms.

Metro Detroit kids are hopping on the school bus and getting back to class! A new school year brings the need for new school supplies, from brand new crayons to a special outfit to wear on the first day. A must-have accessory for many children is a backpack. Once they’ve selected the bag, don’t forget about the backpack accessories like these cool emoji charms.

With hundreds of emojis to choose from today, it’s up to your child to decide which smiles or characters are their favorites. With a stack of wooden craft discs on hand, your child can make as many as they see fit. And why stop at charms? With a design completed, your child can turn the finished emoji into a locker magnet, a colorful pendant or even a pin.

Materials

  • Plain wooden craft discs (in a variety of sizes)
  • Yellow paint
  • Additional paints for decorating
  • Paintbrushes
  • Necklace bail
  • Ball chain and fastener
  • Hot glue and glue gun
  • Mod Podge (optional)
  • Magnets, pinbacks, etc. (optional)

Instructions

To get started, apply a thin layer of yellow craft paint to your wooden discs. Work in an assembly line: paint the tops, then the sides and finally the backs, letting the pieces dry in between each step. Add additional coats of paint, if necessary.

Next, it’s time to make those faces! Using a fine brush, add your emoji details. Let the decorating paint dry completely. To give the charms a protective coating, add a thin layer of Mod Podge to each piece, if you’d like.

With the paints and sealants completely dry, it’s time to turn your emoji into a backpack charm. Attach a necklace bail to the back of the disc with hot glue. Let the glue cool off; thread a small piece of metal ball chain through the bail and then through a loop or zipper on your child’s backpack. Secure with a ball chain clip.
