Looking for a family fun activity that will take the edge off the frigid cold weather? Then try a little sledding this December. There are a bunch of sledding hills made for this fun wintertime activity in southeast Michigan and all of the running uphill before speeding down it will keep the kids active and entertained for hours.

Here, you’ll find a list of the best sledding hills in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties. Most are free but some require some fees, some offer sled rentals and others don’t. Take a look and find a hill that matches up with your kid’s skill level, grab a sled or tube and get to sledding this winter.

Balduck Park

In addition to hiking paths, a life-sized chessboard and a dog park, this Detroit green space has a huge hill that’s perfect for sledding in the winter.

Beverly Hills Village Park

Nestled inside this 34-acre park is a sledding hill that features a steep and a not-so-steep side for sledding. But beware: a forest sits just 30-feet from the steep side of the hill. Parking is available a short walk from the hill. Watch for the annual Winter Family Fun Day the fourth Sunday in January. Skiing trails also available.

Cass Benton Park

This area of Hines Park is the more hilly portion of the park and has been popular with sledding enthusiasts since it was gifted to the park in the 1920s. Also offers the massive Cass Benton Hill and picnic areas, too.

Catalpa Oaks

Civic Center Park

This 73.5-acre park features a variety of fun summertime activities; plus a huge sledding hill in the winter months and a historic village to explore.

Huron Hills Golf Course

In the winter months this municipal golf course transforms into a winter wonderland of long slopes, huge hills and steep descents. Hit the sand trap just right and you can even catch some air.

Kensington Metropark

Pint-sized sled enthusiasts can test their skills on the bunny hill while older kids and adults fly down some of the larger hills that challenge a variety of skill levels. Also offers toboggan runs, beginner snowboarding hills and cross-country skiing routes, too.

Lake Erie Metropark

Winter fun at this spot includes 4.25 miles of cross-country ski trails, a massive sled hill near the wave pool complex and ice fishing out on Lake Erie, weather permitting.

Lake St. Clair Metropark

This sledding hill at this spot can be found in the West Playfield area and features a comfort station, warming room and picnic tables nearby. Find other wintertime activities like ice skating, ice hockey, ice fishing and cross-country skiing, too.

Middlebelt Hill

Sledding down this hill is one of the top things to do in Wayne County. Offers a nearby pavilion, if you need a break, and stairs to assist kids going back up the hill.

Mill Pond Park

Mount Holly

When speaking of wintertime fun in southeast Michigan, you have to mention Mount Holly. This landfill turned mountain now boasts a ski resort that offers lessons and hills for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and skill levels.

Rolling Hills Park

As its name suggests, this 363-acre Washtenaw County spot offers plenty of “rolling hills” to sled down or ski across. There’s even a lodge, complete with a fireplace, for guests to warm up at in the winter months.

Shiawassee Park

The sledding hill at this park offers a 300- to 400-foot run for sledders of all ages. Parking available at the top of the hill. Typically set up to make the ascent back up the hill easier. Expect crowds.
