Happy New Year … again! About a month after the standard American New Year fun kicks off Jan. 1, the Chinese New Year celebrations in metro Detroit and Ann Arbor begin – typically starting sometime between late January and late February.

This festival officially kicks off with the second new moon after the winter solstice, and winds down with the next full moon about 15 days later. This year, in 2019, it begins on Tuesday, Feb. 5 and ends on Feb. 19.

And, as you might know, there’s also a critter to represent the new year, thanks to the Chinese 12-year animal zodiac. And 2019 is the Year of the Pig!
