Detroit Kite Festival Wants Families Flying Free

Thinking we all need more than a little lift, the team at the Detroit Kite Festival thought what better way to do it than by opening up its Little Kite Shop early to fill the sky with color. Stocked with colorful kites, from super simple diamonds to the elaborate Bali dragon kite, kite lovers can buy a kite and even donate one, too.

All of the sales benefit the annual celebration of all things kite, but the festival team also imagined the kites filling families with joy and encouraging them to get outside. Last year, the festival sold out of kits at the popular summer event.

“Launching a kite shop to help us get past the fundraising finish line is great, but we’re even more excited to be able to donate kites, let people ‘pay it forward’ so to speak, so those who would like a kite this summer can get one. In the shop you’ll find a donate-a-kite option for this very purpose. Also, the shop helps us plan for a tenuous and uncertain year, and still allows for us to directly serve and be true to our mission,” Margo Dalal, of the Detroit Kite Festival Team, said in a news release.

The Kite Festival is still set for July 12 but this year’s coronavirus pandemic, organizers are not hosting an in-person event. Instead, they are encouraging families to get out and fly kites at a park near them.

You can find a complete list of parks organizers recommend on their website.

The festival is a volunteer-run nonprofit focused on uplifting kite flying and creation as a platform for radical inclusion, communal play, shared healing, and the celebration of culture and history
