Winter Sports and Fun at the Macomb County Huron-Clinton Metroparks

The colder months offer loads of outdoor fun for families. Check out the activities available at Macomb County's three Huron-Clinton Metroparks.

When it comes to wintertime activities, Macomb County’s Huron-Clinton Metroparks offer loads of outdoor winter fun options for families who want to embrace the ice and snow here in southeast Michigan.

Whether you love cross-country skiing or ice skating, you’re interested in trying a new outdoor sport or you’re just looking for something fun to do with the kiddos on the weekend, Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township, Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township and Wolcott Mill Metropark in Ray Township have something for everyone.

So bundle up and head to one of these Macomb County Huron-Clinton Metroparks – and don’t forget to pack $10 for your parking fee.

Lake St. Clair Metropark

Lake St. Clair is a big draw for families who enjoy boating, fishing and kayaking during the summertime. In the winter, this body of water is a prime spot to ice fish for both pan fish and yellow perch.

Not interested in ice fishing? Try cross-country skiing on two-and-a-half miles of relatively flat trails that are great for beginner and intermediate-level cross-country skiers.

Those who enjoy ice hockey and ice skating can play and skate at the outdoor rink located in the west playfield. Here, you’ll also find a comfort station, warming station and picnic tables. There’s a sledding hill in this area, as well.

Browse Lake St. Clair Metropark’s winter activities map for more information.

Stony Creek Metropark

During the winter months at Stony Creek Metropark, the mountain biking trails are converted into cross-country skiing trails. Rentals are offered on the weekends and run $15 for adults and $9 for ages 16 and under. If you’re looking to rent separate pieces of equipment, rent skis for $6, boots for $6 and poles for $4.

Those interested in ice fishing can do so at Stony Creek Lake, which is below 28 Mile Road. A Michigan fishing license is required.

Skate at the ice skating rink, which is located on Stony Creek Lake near the boat launch. There’s a warming room with vending machines and restrooms, too, for when you need a little break from the cold.

Or sled at the Gladeview and West Branch picnic areas. Families can snowboard here, too.

Wolcott Mill Metropark

While you won’t find winter sports at Wolcott Mill Metropark, Macomb County’s third Huron-Clinton Metropark, you will find plenty of other activities – including chance to meet some critters.

This spot boasts a farm center and historic center* for families who are interested in learning more about history and getting to visit with farm animals on the 250-acre working farm.

Or take a good old-fashioned hike through several wooded trails to take in the splendor of a Michigan winter.

*Note: As of mid-January 2020, the historic center is closed for maintenance. Be sure to check ahead before driving out to visit.
