Cast aside the "Under the Sea" ditty and what you know about that redhead "Ariel" – and dive into a truly "new world" as the Marquis Theater in Northville presents The Little Mermaid, a children's show that starts up on Saturday, Nov. 9 and plays through Jan. 26, 2014.
For the final installment of its 2013 "Classic Storybook Season," the group presents its homespun version of the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. This take presents the timeless story of a young mermaid, here named "Coral," who goes against everything she knows of her water-bound life in pursuit of love on land.
With original song compositions, the Marquis fills its live performance with plenty of music. Kids can discover new tunes like "Mumble Grumble," "Tiny Bubbles" and "Don't Worry about a Thing," a theater representative tells Metro Parent.
Spellbinding sets and costumes all add to the ambience of this underwater world, like the big beautiful fish, featuring actors wearing giant fish "heads" and clothed in black, giving the illusion of aquatic creatures swimming around the stage.
Little audience members (ages 3-plus) also are actively welcome to participate in the plot, as actors – many of whom are kids ages 8-15 themselves – ask the audience questions, like "Which way did they go?"
Coral grows to learn that love has no boundaries, and that there is much more value to reality than there is in fantasy, making for a great little moral too. This production is sure to be a treat for the entire family.
