Couple Recreates Birthing Photo Session with Adopted Kitten

And people are freaking out over the photos, which have gone viral. As mom to both human and cat, I'm here to tell you to chill out.

On Jan. 10, 2018, Lucy Schultz and her partner, Steven, welcomed a 6-pound, 7-ounce bundle of joy. Like many couples, they decided to document his arrival. The only difference between this couple and others: They “had” an orange-and-white male kitten – not a human baby. As you can imagine, their announcement of his arrival has caused quite a stir.

Schultz is a longtime cat lover and photographer who had been fostering cats for years. She never had a kitten to call her own – until now. So she and her partner celebrated the kitty’s adoption with a birthing photo shoot – just like ones that have become so popular for human births. Since then, the photos have gone viral – and, well, lots of people are pissed.

The pair’s good friend and fellow photographer Elizabeth Woods-Darby snapped the pics, which Schlutz posted to a “New Baby” album on her Facebook page. You’ll see pictures of Schultz at every stage of labor – including that crowning moment, photos of dad waiting to catch the kitten as he exits the “womb” and a snap of mom breast-feeding.

Here are some of my faves:

The album description reads, “On 1/10/18 we welcome our first baby kitten, a neutered male DLH. He is 22″ long and weighed 6 pounds 7 oz. He is already eating solid food. Name to be announced. We are so in love <3.”

Judging by the comments, some people saw the humor in the photos. One of my fave responses: “Shouldn’t he (Steven) be shirtless to better connect skin to skin, or skin to fur as it were?”

On the other hand, there are so many negative comments, including those who are saying that the pictures mock childbirth and are offensive, disturbing and creepy. Some are even hating on mom’s hairy legs.

Really?!

As mom to one human and two cats, I am here to tell you haters this: Chill the f–k out. I gave birth too, and yes, it’s miraculous – but it’s not beautiful. Let’s be honest. Just like you don’t want to see these pictures, I don’t want to see pictures of you birthing your baby in a bathtub or wherever you decide to welcome your child.

Also, let’s not act like we’re all so high and mighty because we gave birth. I struggled to conceive and do feel like my child is a miracle, but here’s the thing: I don’t think I’m so special because I birthed him. I’m just like every other woman who gave birth before me.

And, honestly, none of us are as badass as women from my great-grandmother’s generation. That woman gave birth in a field in a small village in Greece while she was working. She cut the cord on her own and kept at her job. So get over yourselves, moms. Women have been giving birth forever! We’re not THAT special because we CHOSE to do it, too – so stop acting like you’re better than everyone because you had a kid.

Would I snap pics like this? No. But do I think it’s so disturbing and disgusting? No. I think it’s funny. It’s hilarious and actually really creative!

The negative comments are another reminder that so many of you have lost your sense of humor. You’re outraged over this of all things? There are SO many other things – real issues – you should be outraged over. Let people have their fun and, if you don’t like it, don’t look at it.

What do you think of these pics? Do you agree with me or not? Tell us in comments.
