Cub Scout Nature Hike Ends at Nude Beach

Cub Scouts on a nature hike are likely to see a lot of interesting and natural things, but a naked fanny probably isn’t in the nature guide. That’s exactly what one pack of 9- and 10-year-old kids saw, however, when their nature hike through Torrey Pines State Park in San Diego ended up on the city’s unofficial nude beach, according to the LA Times.

Once on the beach, scout leadership “quickly rerouted to protect the youth,” but that didn’t stop one mom from getting her panties in a twist, the LA Times reports.

The sunbathers at the beach were a little surprised by the ambush, but Diane Lekvan, who was one of the adult leaders on the hike, was outraged that Troop 766’s pack master, Desmond Wheatley, had lead them on a trail through the area. She was even more upset about his response when she pointed out where they were.

“…I said ‘Hey what are you doing? We’re in the middle of a nudist beach.’ He said ‘this is a naturalist beach, and my family and I go through here all the time. It’s not a big deal.’ And I got really angry,” Lekvan told CBS 8.

She explains that they had to continue on because they would be walking through the same environment if they turned back.

“I was nauseated because I’ve never seen just a bunch of nude people walking around holding hands, strange people that I don’t know,” she told CBS.

After finding out that all appropriate protocol was followed, the Boy Scouts decided Wheatley should not be punished for his actions, but parents and Internet users aren’t letting the situation go so easily. Surprisingly, though, they aren’t as upset with Wheatley as they are with Lekvan.

“We took the kid with us to a spa last weekend on a weekend-trip. We didn’t know that the swim and the sauna area were not separate so there were many naked people around,” Mommyish reader Mad Overlord writes. “We figured seeing some dicks, butts and breasts would help a 9 year old with understanding biology and body diversity. She didn’t mind and was in no way traumatized. If the parents make no big deal out of it, I guess kids will be fine with some nudity.”

Others, like Mommyish reader S Paleshi, defend Lekvan’s reaction saying that some parents don’t want their kids to be so free with nudity. “Those parents have the right to set those guidelines and no one else has the right to supersede that decision,” Paleshi writes.

Did these kids get a huge dose of life altering shock in the form of booty – or a momentary and awkward case of the giggles?
