So it really is no surprise that a viral picture of human milk ducts is taking the interwebs by storm.
The image, which depicts the muscular system in a woman’s chest, was originally posted by Twitter user @lemonadead with the caption “I just realized I never saw a photo of a female muscle system. This is NOT what I imagined milk ducts to look like.”
The ducts appear petal-like and form a circle that connects to the nipple – some users were quick to point out that it looks like a flower.
Twitter user, @Babe_artist, admitted that the image scared her at first but went on to say that she thinks it’s pretty – and that it explains a lot.
@Perilandra agreed with her, saying that she was “irritated” that the layout of women’s muscles wasn’t something she learned in health class.
Others, however, were more than happy to miss out on such an anatomy lesson. In fact, the original poster seems to have gotten the heebie-jeebies from the image.
“How are some of you finding this beautiful? I’m legit STRESSED knowing this is inside my titties,” she wrote.
And user @AzieDee added, “We aren’t supposed to see this. We weren’t supposed to know.”
I do have to admit that when I first saw the image, my skin started to crawl, but that happens to me with certain patterns.
Once I got past that, I realized that the human body is amazing and this is just further proof of that. Each one of those petals is there to sustain life – to feed babies – and there’s nothing gross or disturbing about that.
The only real qualm that I have with the image is that I, too, have not seen it before – and I took anatomy and physiology courses in both high school and college.
Perhaps if we started to teach people of all genders about their body and what goes on inside of it, they wouldn’t grow up uncomfortable about it and wouldn’t get grossed out by an image of their own anatomy.
If we embraced our bodies and taught our kids to do the same, maybe, just maybe, boobs wouldn’t be such a big deal.
What do you think of the image? Is it beautiful or creepy? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.
