Tweens and teens do all sorts of silly things to each other at school, but these days, there are some serious repercussions for this sort of behavior. In fact, a 12-year-old girl at Milwee Middle School in Florida was recently “put in handcuffs, placed in the back of a patrol car, and booked into a juvenile detention center,” CBS 6 TV reports.
The crime? Pinching a random boy’s butt during what was supposedly a game.
Breana Evans tells the news station that this happened in early March between classes. She was suspended for the action, but no charges were initially filed. That is, until the boy’s mother intervened and wanted to prosecute.
As a result, the 12-year-old girl was charged with battery. “The Seminole State Attorney said if Breana Evans completes a program and community service, the charge will be dismissed and her record will be clean,” the station adds.
This boy’s mom – who would not comment to the local news station – seems to be overreacting. The punishment does not fit the crime! A suspension for the young girl was enough. Don’t you think?
Sure, I’m going to assume the young boy got embarrassed when he was pinched as part of what the girl says is a game, but I don’t think his embarrassment was worth a battery charge.
This mom did not need to intervene like that. Kids are kids. They make stupid decisions but as an adult, I think this mom should have rethought her decision to press charges.
What do you think? Was the mom right for pressing charges – or should she just have let it go? Tell us in the comments.
