“This kid is rude and ungovernable! I do not want him in my house at all!”
Utah mom Kathy Sherrer, age 36, wrote these words in a note that she gave to her 8-year-old son when she abandoned him at a local hospital.
“Court documents say the boy walked into the hospital in West Jordan on Feb. 21 and gave employees a note from his mother saying she didn’t want him,” ABC 7 News reports.
Now the mom is facing child abuse and abandonment charges for leaving him there, KSL.com notes – but Sherrer says she thought she was just taking advantage of the state’s Safe Haven Law.
Division of Child and Family Services spokesperson Ashley Sumner tells KSL.com that parents can drop infants who are up to three days old off at local hospitals under Utah’s Safe Haven Law, no questions asked.
Clearly the boy – who reportedly had a bruise on his arm from where mom hit him with a spoon – is much older than the Safe Haven Law age.
What was mom thinking? Turns out she has four other children at home, all of whom are special needs. Her 8-year-old was simply becoming too much for her to handle.
But isn’t that simply how it is sometimes?
Being a parent is tough and your kids are going to be unruly. And honestly, if your kid is a total jerk, it’s probably your fault. Clearly this was a cry for help from this mom, but she went about it the wrong way. She could have taken advantage of one of the crisis centers in her area where parents can leave children for 24-hours if they are feeling overwhelmed, KSL.com reports.
I feel for this young boy. He may have behavioral issues but I imagine that he’s likely going to have emotional issues after being abandoned at a local hospital.
