Designs by Neveah Woods-Jones of Clinton Township Impress Mattel

Local 9-year-old, Neveah Woods-Jones' handcrafted Barbie fashions have gone viral – and the makers of the fashion doll have taken notice.

If socks start to go missing in the Woods-Jones family, it’s not a family dog to blame.

9-year-old Neveah Woods-Jones from Clinton Township uses socks and other household items to create her own fashion designs for her Barbie dolls.

“I wanted to make Barbie clothes because I’m into fashion and I want to be a fashion designer when I grow up,” Woods-Jones says. “I use socks, ribbons and bows. Sometimes I sew with a needle and thread and sometimes I use hot glue.”

Her creations caught the eye of Mattel, the Barbie company, after a social media post her mother made went viral. The Mattel social media team sent her a package of Barbies, doll clothes and a toy car for her dolls to ride in.

“That was a surprise when it came!” she says. “I was shocked.”

Woods-Jones says she was inspired by her mother to start creating clothes for her dolls four months ago.

“I saw my mom wear lots of pretty clothes and I wanted to recreate them,” she says. Her other inspirations come from celebrity fashion like Jojo Siwa’s bows to Beyonce’s red carpet gowns.

“I tried to design something like Beyonce’s silver dress from the red carpet, and I’m still working on it,” she says. “It’s a really long dress and it’s silver and sparkly.”

Her creations often include ruffles and sparkles, which she says she loves. For now she sews by hand, but mom Sha’Kvia Woods says a sewing machine and sewing lessons are in the works.

“So many people were commenting and messaging about sending money, so we created a GoFundMe,” Woods says. “People that I know were stating they wanted to help with sewing lessons and getting a sewing machine.”

“The support from everyone – friends, family, even strangers – has been amazing,” she says. “A lot of people are telling me they’re showing their children and their grandchildren her fashion creations for inspiration.

“It’s been really positive feedback,” she adds.

With the help of a sewing machine, Neveah may be able to keep up with the demand from her friends and four younger siblings who want her to make them clothes for their dolls, too.

“I still have to decide on my prices,” she says. “I’m thinking maybe $10.”

She says her younger sisters look up to her and were excited to see her being interviewed about her Barbie fashion on TV.

“They say good job and they say they need some more Barbie clothes,” she says.

Her father, Benaiah Jones says he is “very proud of her and the example she is setting for her younger siblings.”

“She is fearlessly loving leader,” and she “has always been a star on the rise,” he adds.

“I’m very excited and very proud of Nevaeh,” her mom says. “She’s encouraged many people to keep pursuing their dreams and let people know that anything is possible. You’re never too young and you’re never too old to achieve your goal.”

Neveah has big dreams for her fashion projects outside of selling her creations to her friends at school.

“I’d like to be in Barbie commercials,” she says. Then, when she grows up, she plans to “move to New York and then maybe Paris and do all kinds of clothes – shirts, pants, skirts, dresses and even boys clothes!”

Neveah’s top five fashion tips for kids

  1. Sparkles and bows go with everything -“I wear them every day. Plus, sequins! I love sequins!” Neveah says.
  2. The fanny pack is back – “I have a lot of fanny packs but my favorite one is denim,” she says.
  3. Add leg warmers – “I like to wear my tall boots with colorful leg warmers, and the color always matches my outfit,” she says.
  4. Pick a style inspiration – One of Neveah’s favorite celebrities is Jojo Siwa. “All my bows are Jojo Bows that have decorations on them.”
  5. Don’t be afraid to match – “I have a lot of jackets, most have unicorns or rainbows on them, and I match them to my purse or mini backpack.”
