Conversation Topics for Kids, The Rocket Ferndale Spring Toys, Special Needs Therapy

Hey! Umm, how’s … stuff? Ever struggle to get a discussion going? Kids can too – especially with web chats replacing real ones. But don’t worry. The Metro Parent April 2015 magazine has conversation topics and tips for kids – and a little 101 on this essential area of manners and etiquette for kids.

And that’s just the start. From special needs therapy alternatives (don’t miss our autism workshop!) to southeast Michigan events, we’re here to help.

Special needs tips and advice

April is our big special needs issue. For insight on how to raise a child with Asperger’s syndrome along with a neurotypical child, we talk to local Milford mom and nurse Kelly Miltimore (she also leads a workshop at the 2015 Metro Parent Living with Autism Workshop).

We then delve into nine types of special needs therapy, like the gluten-free diet, LENS neurofeedback and brain balance techniques. ADHD is another area that’s come a long way, and our in-depth story looks at ADHD symptoms in kids, parenting an ADHD child and more.

Looking for special needs camps for adults? Camp All Star in Madison Heights provides great opportunities. Also get to know Plymouth mom Jamesena Ingram, who runs Autism Compass Consulting, an autism consulting service; Jacob Levy’s Modified Music-ation, focused on teaching music to students with autism and other special needs; and a unique Scoliosis Activity Suit alternative-to-braces option at Anchor Bay Spine Center in New Baltimore.

Parenting articles on child development

The second part of our child care series explores the ups and downs of finding care for your child. Questions like ‘Where are daycares near me?’ or ‘Where’s a child care near me?’ are tough to answer, but our article gives some solid first steps.

Are you raising a child without religion? A new study hints at interesting benefits. For younger kids, we dig into the topic of ‘why do kids eat boogers’ – and what can you to do help them kick the habit? And, in terms of good parenting tips for teenagers, we tackle distracted driving – from how emotions affect driving to the big no-no of texting and driving – with Champion Driving School in Ypsilanti.

Toys, clowns, crafts and recipes

Spring is officially here – and we’re celebrating with cool toys from The Rocket Ferndale, a neat new novelty store (its second locale after The Rocket Ypsilanti – spoiler alert, we’re partial to the horse head squirrel feeder!). April is also National Humor Month – and what better way to celebrate than with Rosco the Clown in Macomb County?

If you’re hungry, sample the new healthy, teeth-cleaning Zollipops suckers, invented by Alina Morse, 9, of Wolverine Lake. We also look at the wacky marshmallow drop tradition in Wayne County Parks at Elizabeth Park Trenton and Nankin Mills Hines Park in Westland (just don’t eat the treats!). But definitely try our gluten-free macaroni and cheese recipe from the Arctic Cafe at the Detroit Zoo.

For a little extra fun, read Allie the Annoying Elephant by kid Kennedy Keller of Lake Orion – and make a DIY canvas road mat for toy cars.

Awesome metro Detroit events and travel

Hunting for a few good southeast Michigan events? Our calendar covers FestiFools in Ann Arbor, Rochester’s Pinball Expo Michigan extravaganza and other things to do in metro Detroit with kids. And for train rides in Michigan, you’ve got two options: Chuggington Live!, a musical at Fox Theatre Detroit – and Day Out with Thomas at Greenfield Village in Dearborn.

Finally, for best family vacations, we head to sunny Phoenix in Arizona. From the Phoenix Zoo to Phoenix botanical garden, find lots of things to do in Phoenix.

It’s all waiting for you in the April 2015 edition of Metro Parent. Don’t miss a single issue all year. Subscribe for FREE today!
