Advances in technology allow today’s expectant parents to get a glimpse at what their little boy or girl will look like weeks before their bundle of joy is even born.
Long past the days of difficult-to-decipher ultrasound pictures, 3D/4D ultrasounds let parents see a baby’s unique features – maybe even making out mom or dad’s nose or the same chubby cheeks a sibling has. Moms-to-be can even count baby’s fingers and toes on the ultrasound screen.
While you might be offered a 3D/4D ultrasound as part of your obstetrical care, there are several businesses in Michigan that offer the service to pregnant women as an elective procedure. You can also check with your birthing center or hospital to see if 3D/4D ultrasounds are offered.
Expectant parents should keep in mind that elective 3D/4D ultrasounds are not the same as medical, diagnostic ultrasounds and won’t replace seeing your OB or midwife. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration currently recommends against keepsake ultrasounds.
Prices vary and some establishments include prints, a disc of your images or even a video as part of the cost. Here’s a look at some places in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Livingston counties and beyond that offer 3D/4D ultrasounds.
