Profile

At Professional Dental of Clarkston, owners Dr. Brian Davidson, DMD, LVIF, and Dr. Amy Davidson, DMD, dive deeper into a patient’s oral health and how it impacts his or her overall wellness. The duo gets to the root of their patients problems using physiological research to find the cause of many ailments, including jaw alignment issues, headaches and even sleep apnea and snoring.

While Professional Dental of Clarkston offers plenty of diverse treatment options, the office also provides general dentistry for the whole family.

“We look to cultivate a family-based practice and look to take care of everyone’s overall health,” Dr. Amy says. “We want to start with the kids. We usually see them for the first time around the age of three. We want to start them off with a really great, positive experience and show them there is nothing to be afraid of.”

Younger children are welcome into the room with their parents and older siblings to watch what happens before their first exam, she says. This is an important step to ensure kids see that dental work doesn’t hurt and it isn’t scary.

Dr. Brian and Dr. Amy have continued to focus on continuing education in the areas of physiologic based dentistry to better serve their patients. Dr. Brian provides treatment for sleep apnea, snoring, full-mouth reconstruction, treatment for TMJ, headaches, migraines, and facial pain. Dr. Amy focuses on early treatment for facial growth and airway development. as well as treating infants, children and adults for lip and tongue ties.

“We really look at anything that can affect how the jaw is developing,” she says. “Our passion is to get into what is causing the problem before we begin to treat it.”

Dr. Brian has always been committed to looking beyond the teeth and is trained in the areas of comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning with cutting-edge technology. Dr. Brian studied with the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, which is a leader in physiologic based dentistry. He earned a fellowship of distinction at LVI and became one of less than 10 dentists in Michigan to hold that honor.

Dr. Amy continues to educate herself and has studied with the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies in the area of physiologic neuromuscular and full-face orthopedic concepts. She is also studying breathing science, which can help with sleep and daytime breathing problems and airway issues.

The doctors believe a fully educated team in the office can provide the best care for the patient. The dental hygienists and dental assisting team at Professional Dental of Clarkston are trained to recognize abnormalities and refer to either Dr. Davidson for further treatment. Lori Callender, RDH, COMS, is one of their hygienists who is certified in orofacial myology. She can help identify and treat patients with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD). Orofacial myofunctional disorders are disorders of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth. One example of an OMD is a tongue thrust. She can help with in-office therapies to help train the tongue to be in the correct position.

New mothers often come to Dr. Amy when they are concerned their child is tongue tied or lip tied and unable to nurse properly.

“The mothers are often having pain during nursing because the babies aren’t able to latch correctly. Some common symptoms of a restricted tongue or lip can present as painful nursing, low milk supply, engorged breasts, and/or blocked ducts in the mother,” Dr. Amy says. “For the infant, they present with symptoms such poor weight gain as well as reflux and colic due to an ‘inefficient’ latch.”

Dr. Amy also evaluates and treats jaw growth and development issues. Symptoms such as clicking and popping in the jaw, headaches, migraines and other problems can often be addressed and remedied by their practice.

“We really found our path in being able to treat the whole body through physiologic-based dentistry,” Dr. Amy says. “There are so many people who don’t realize how their symptoms may be coming from their bite or their mouth. We are here to help them.”
