It is estimated that that 65 percent of today’s kindergartners will have job titles that do not currently exist. Experts say that the jobs of the future will be closely linked to science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Parents can help their students by taking advantage of opportunities to explore the many possibilities these fields will offer in the future. One such opportunity, known as Explore Careers in Manufacturing and Technology, is happening on Dec. 6, 2018 at Macomb Community College. This career expo is free and open to the public.
Explore Careers in Manufacturing and Technology is an evening event that follows the two-day Auto STEAM Days offered to local students on Dec. 5-6 – which exposes them to different career paths, specifically within the STEAM fields. The daytime event, which takes place 8:30-11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m., is geared at students only and features interactive pods and a variety of displays that highlight different aspects of the automotive and manufacturing industries.
“It’s really all about developing career awareness and technology awareness, particularly within the automotive field,” says Joe Petrosky, the dean of the Engineering and Advanced Technology at Macomb Community College.
Both events will be held at the Macomb Community College South Campus. Explore Careers in Manufacturing and Technology is open to students, their families and community members – and showcases ample opportunities for attendees to learn more about the career prospects right here in metro Detroit.
The Explore Careers in Manufacturing and Technology career expo, which takes place from 5:30 until 8 p.m., is an extension of Macomb County’s celebration of national Manufacturing (MFG) Day and supported by many sponsors.
In addition to access to the daytime exhibits and car show, registered participants will be treated to a light dinner, an opportunity to interact with area employers and a panel discussion about educational pathways that lead to career success. The panel discussion will include insight from interns all the way to CEOs, all of whom can provide perspective to the public.
“That evening event has local employers that come in. Student and parents and families can interact with those employers,” Petrosky says. During the event, families can “learn more about apprenticeships, learn more about internships (and) the programs available at the college.”
One lucky student will leave with a professional-grade drone, which will be offered as a door prize at the end of the evening.
