Curious about what supports are waiting for your child through the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD)? On Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, find out at the free, fun-for-all-ages Special Education Expo.
With a “World of Possibilities theme,” this event returns for its third year, ready to answer caregivers’ questions and provide food and entertainment for kids from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m.
“The nice thing about this event is that it’s great for families, adults and children,” says Justin Michalak, MISD’s Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Student Services. “It’s about bringing the whole Macomb community together for the purpose of supporting students with special needs.”

Events and entertainment offered at the Special Education Expo
“This event will take place indoors and outdoors,” says Michalak. “It will include magicians, touch-a-truck, a petting zoo, cider and doughnuts, bounce houses for kids and a lot of community support — including over 60 community agencies that assist students with disabilities and their families.”
Along with cider and doughnuts, other food available to families will include hot dogs, chips, cookies, pop and popcorn.
“There will be DJs and princesses walking around engaging with kids and families,” Michalak adds. “Also, businesses will bring their construction vehicles, public safety vehicles. Poloce cars, fire trucks, ambulances and buses will be available for kids to enjoy by getting up close to them.”
How parents can stay involved beyond the Special Education Expo
After the fun is done, parents of children with special needs can join the Parent Advisory Committee and attend monthly meetings.
“Every meeting includes an agenda item that is important for families, and there is usually a presenter who can answer questions,” says Michalak. “We talk about varied topics like legislation, sensory, behaviors, mental health and how to deal with online predators.”
