Where Kids Can Pick Up Free School Meals During COVID-19

Many kids depend on their schools to get nutritious meals. COVID-19 means many schools in Michigan are closed through April 13, but some schools are offering free meals to kids during this time.

For more than 22 million children nationwide, school isn’t just where they learn, it’s where they receive necessary meals.

Due to coronavirus concerns, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced schools in Michigan will be closed until at least April 13. In the meantime, those kids who rely on school lunches need to keep receiving them.

Every school district is handling the food distribution separately. We compiled our list with help from ClickonDetroit and MLive‘s earlier lists, along with additional research on schools’ websites and Facebook pages. Chalkbeat Detroit created a handy map to locate your closest food pickup location, too.

Note: Meals are typically free for any child under the age of 18 and students with disabilities ages 18-26. At most pick-up sites, kids don’t need to be present and you can call ahead to receive allergy-friendly meals. Check ahead, as all days and times are subject to change as this situation evolves. Delivery options may be available as well.
