Learn, Play, Score Program Offers Free Street Hockey to Kids in Detroit

Chevrolet, the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Parks and Recreation to offer a six-week virtual street hockey program this summer that's free for kids ages 6-14.

Youth sports are expensive. Between sign-up fees, gear fees and the money it takes carting kids to and from practice or games, it’s no wonder kids quit playing sports before their teenage years.

Chevrolet, the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Parks and Recreation Department are looking to ease the financial burden of families in Detroit who have kids interested in playing hockey with their free virtual summer camp program, “Street Hockey in the D at Home.”

This program builds upon the original “Street Hockey in the D” program launched in the Detroit Public Schools Community District earlier this year and provides six-weeks of online instructional street hockey content.

“Street Hockey in the D at Home brings the excitement of hockey directly to where kids are right now,” Kevin Brown, the director of community relations & foundation for the Detroit Red Wings said in a news release. “Whether playing street hockey safely in their driveway, basement or on the sidewalk, the Red Wings are proud to offer this new virtual, enrichment opportunity for kids in the city.”

Kids who are interested in the program, which runs July 7-Aug. 13, 2020, can register at the Adam Butzel Recreation Complex or the Farwell Recreation Center, June 17-19, or 22-24 from 8-11 a.m.
