Event Details
Big trees are everywhere in Michigan: in parks, along sidewalks or even in your backyard. Ready to big tree hunt? Grab a friend, a piece of string and a marker and head into the trees. To measure tree size, tie your string around the tree’s trunk at 4.5 feet high, like a belt.
Mark where the string meets itself and then measure the distance between marks to find out just how big your Big Tree is. Visit www.bigtreehunt.com to enter your tree online, learn more about the contest, or find out where you can pick up a paper entry form.
Every week until the contest ends on September 3, 2019, ReLeaf Michigan’s Facebook page will feature one entry as the contest’s “Tree of the Week.” At the end of the Michigan Big Tree Hunt Contest, all entrants are invited to attend a special closing ceremony where prizes are awarded for the biggest tree by county. Prizes will also be awarded for the largest Eastern White Pine and largest tree found by an adult (16 and older) and child (15 and younger) in the state.
The Michigan Big Tree Hunt is a fantastic, free adventure and a great opportunity for Michiganders to take some time to enjoy fresh air and the majesty of the trees that surround us. Happy Tree Hunting!

This winter, the Ypsilanti District Library is featuring “The Power of Children,” an exhibit dedicated to three children that changed history. The exhibit profiles Ruby Bridges, Anne Frank, and Ryan White — three young people who became the faces of some of the most intense struggles of the twentieth century and whose lives and stories continue to teach and inspire us.
Visitors be transported into the different worlds that these children endured: the Holocaust in the 1940s, the Jim Crow south in the 1960s, and the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. This exhibit includes intense themes and is recommended for adults and for children ages 8 and older.

Global Glass: A Survey of Form and Function is a remarkable exhibition drawn from the extensive glass collection owned by the University of Michigan – Dearborn. The exhibition, which was featured at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts from June until October of 2018, surveys important artists and works created from the mid-1960s to the present. Global Glass examines both functional glass objects and pure sculptural forms that have often taken cues from other fine arts media and movements in the U.S. and internationally.
Among the 56 artists represented are glass giants Harvey Littleton, Howard Ben Tré, Dale Chihuly, Ann Robinson, and Kate Vogel. The exhibition has been curated by Don Desmett, independent curator and critic. The Berkowitz gallery is pleased to share these remarkable studio glass works from the university’s permanent collection with the UM Dearborn campus and greater community!
Global Glass: A Survey of Form and Function will be on view from January 31 to September 20. Gallery hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Thursday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.

Event Details
Cranbrook Institute of Science’s newest exhibit, Doom of the Dinosaurs: Are We Next? allows visitors to walk through mass extinctions that altered the planet and explore prehistoric times when dinosaurs ruled the land.
A must-see experience for children and adults alike, come face-to-face with full-size skeletons of famous dinosaurs, including the Tyrannosaurus rex and less commonly known species such as the Edmontosaurus, and examine ancient coral reef dwellers and sea life once found in Michigan. As you test your knowledge of dinosaurs and the five large-scale mass extinctions our planet has experienced over the last 500 million years, the Institute invites you to learn the facts, see the evidence and decide for yourself if we’re in the midst of a sixth mass extinction.
Children will get the chance to interact with computer quizzes throughout the exhibit and take home their own masterpiece from the dinosaur coloring station. Open during regular business hours, which are as follows:
