This winter, the Ypsilanti District Library is featuring “The Power of Children,” an exhibit dedicated to three children that changed history. The exhibit profiles Ruby Bridges, Anne Frank, and Ryan White — three young people who became the faces of some of the most intense struggles of the twentieth century and whose lives and stories continue to teach and inspire us.
Visitors be transported into the different worlds that these children endured: the Holocaust in the 1940s, the Jim Crow south in the 1960s, and the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. This exhibit includes intense themes and is recommended for adults and for children ages 8 and older.

Shipwrecked! is a stirring coming-of-age drama set during a fierce winter storm on Lake Huron in 1893. Twelve-year-old Aaron Buchanan, sailing with his parents on their small schooner loaded with Christmas trees from Sault Ste. Marie, is tested in ways he never dreamed possible when a ferocious gale suddenly materializes in Thunder Bay’s infamous “Shipwreck Alley.”
Inspired by the desperate circumstances, he finds the sailing skills, bravery and physical strength to help effect the daring rescue of his family. This original drama, written by long-time Wild Swan playwright Jeff Duncan, is based on historical accounts of the period and provides older students with a fine opportunity to explore the Great Lakes and Michigan’s history, geography, music and maritime heritage.

Event Details
“Teens Using Drugs: What To Know and What To Do” is a free, ongoing, two-part series.
Part one is presented on the first Tuesdays of October, November and January through June (EXCEPTION: second Tuesday of January 2019) and provides information about teen substance use, including signs and patterns of a substance use problem.
Part two is presented on the second Tuesdays of October, November and January through June (EXCEPTION: second Tuesday of January 2019,) and has break-out sessions for adults to learn strategies to effectively help when adolescent alcohol/other drug use is suspected or identified and for teens to explore the personal effects of substance use. Part Two ends with adults and young people together hearing a talk by a young person in recovery from a substance use disorder.
The series is held from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, and is presented by Dawn Farm Youth and Family Services therapists. The series is co-sponsored by Dawn Farm, the Ann Arbor Public Schools, the WISD/LESA Health Educators’ Learning Network (supporting and advocating for Whole School, Whole Community, and the Whole Child Approach-WSCC,) and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System Greenbrook Recovery Center.
All programs are free and open to all. The series is inclusive of parents/guardians, teens, other family members, professionals and students – all are welcome. Registration is not required. A certificate to document attendance can be provided on request.
