Rainsticks Experiment for Kids

The sounds around us have a big impact on our lives, and we can use science to create and manipulate sounds of our own. Create your own rainstick while learning about how soundwaves are created.

You know what sounds like a great idea? Some science fun – sound science, to be exact! That’s right: This part of the Virtual Camp, brought to you by Metro Parent and Michigan Science Center, is all about sounds and noises!

But before we begin – shhh. Did you hear that? Well, if it was at the right pitch and frequency, you probably did. What we hear can impact how we interact with the world around us.

Hearing the sound of a bicycle bell, for example, lets us know to get out of the way, while the sound of a cat purring can have a calming effect. The sound of rain can relaxing, too. A rainstick captures some of that soothing science. And you can build one that’s just right for you with this experiment.

For example, if you want to create a loud, heavy rain sound, you can customize your rainstick to do just that. Prefer a softer, quieter, gentler rain? With this experiment, that’s also an option.

Ready for a downpour of fun? Scroll down and find out how to make your own rainstick by watching the video. Then, get the guide for the step-by-step directions – plus cool sound trivia and extra resources.

When you’re all set, take the quiz for a chance at great prizes. And don’t forget to snap pix of all the fun you’re having and post to Instagram with the hashtag #MPcamp!
