Sniffles, strep throat, ear infections and more. Any pediatrician can treat your child for these common childhood illnesses, but the physicians at Serenity Pediatrics in Bloomfield Hills have a different approach to caring for kids. In fact, the doctors work with the entire family to help children thrive, says Stacy Fox, the coordinator of Public Relations, Marketing and Assistant Director of Happiness for Serenity Pediatrics.
“We’re a completely different kind of office. We see parents and families as our clients, not just the children,” she says. “They are not an account number here. We want all of our doctors to know our parents and all of our parents to know our doctors and love our doctors as much as we do. We are a family and we want to help the family.”
Dr. Hannan Alsahlani opened Serenity Pediatrics in 2017 with the hope that her practice would be different from any other pediatric practice. Today, with a team of three doctors, the practice continues to grow and offers a unique experience for patients and their families.
“The office dynamics are different. We are friends and coworkers. We want to take care of your kids and we want to watch your kids grown up,” Fox says. “We’re welcoming of all kinds of families. Families come in all shapes and sizes and we love all of our kids and babies.”
Visiting the pediatrician shouldn’t stressful for kids or parents. That’s why Serenity Pediatrics tries to create a peaceful and calm environment for patients and their moms and dads.
“We want parents to feel comfortable talking to the doctors and be able to focus their attention on the conversation. So, while mom or dad and the doctor have a conversation, we will watch the kids. We’ll entertain them. We want the parents to be completely at ease and not distracted in the exam room,” Fox says.
For new moms, Serenity Pediatrics offers a private newborn waiting room and a private breastfeeding room. If they need to stay after an appointment to feed an infant, they have a comfortable place to do it, and the office staff will help with any older kids.
Themed rooms – like underwater, superhero and space – are not only entertaining for kids, but they help keep visits a bit less stressful. To keep things even more relaxed, some of the doctors opt out of wearing the typical doctor uniform, Fox says.
“Some of the doctors don’t even wear white coats. We don’t want kids to fear the doctors. We want them kids to see them as another adult who helps take care of them,” Fox says.
When it comes to choosing a doctor to visit, families can select the doctor they feel comfortable with, or see a different one each time. The doctors confer with each other to provide a standard of care.
“The industry standard is 15 minutes for well visits. We don’t feel we can take care of mom and child in 15 minutes so we dedicate 30 minutes to well visits. We want to make sure we answer every single question a parent has about their child’s wellness,” Fox says.
Serenity Pediatrics is located in a new, eco-friendly building near Woodward Avenue on Long Lake Road in Bloomfield Hills. The office is state-of-the-art and offers many in-house services.
The on-site lab can provide while-you-wait test results for a lot of blood work and tests. Fox notes that this is helpful for things like strep and influenza. It allows the doctors to get the results quickly, send prescriptions to the pharmacy electronically and help the child to feel better faster.
In addition to excellent care, the practice plans to offer different events, such as adolescent night, parenting classes and even a seminar on bullying, to help with a child’s overall wellness.
Serenity Pediatrics offers appointments from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. They will also begin a walk-in-clinic on Saturday mornings this winter.
The doctors are available after hours for urgent needs that arise outside of office hours.
“We have a 24-hour answering service. The doctors will hold your hand 24 hours a day,” she says. “We encourage parents to call if they have questions. The more we help and educate parents, the more confident they will become in making decisions for their children.”
For more serious issues, the doctors have hospital privileges at Beaumont Hospitals in Troy and Royal Oak.
The practice is currently accepting new patients. Serenity Pediatrics can also help those interested in switching from another practice and make the process easy and seamless.
Parents expecting babies can register with the practice before the baby is born. The doctors like to see newborns 24 to 48 hours after they are discharged from the hospital.
