What is Japhet?
Japhet School is an independent, co-ed, award-winning school for children in preschool through 8th grade. Japhet School’s mission is to nurture and prepare each child for life by integrating character education with a strong academic program.
Peaceful, Quiet Setting
A low student-to-teacher ratio provides greater individual support and increased opportunity to excel. Whether a child learns quickly or needs extra time to master concepts, a small and quiet setting enables each child to succeed. Japhet School teachers truly get to know their students because they teach them for two years. This affords first-hand knowledge and awareness of each student’s accomplishments and potential, as well as insight into the learning styles of each child.
Japhet students receive a strong academic foundation that prepares them for the transition to high school. Japhet graduates move comfortably and successfully into a variety of public, charter, parochial, and independent high schools. Graduates qualify for honors and advanced placement college credit courses. Standardized testing confirms that Japhet students collectively achieve above the national average.
Award-winning Character Education
At Japhet character education is integrated into the entire school program. Based on 18 character qualities studied on a two-year cycle, Japhet’s character curriculum equips students with skills that help them become leaders with character and integrity. Japhet School was the first independent school nationwide and the first school in Michigan to be recognized as a National School of Character by the Character Education Partnership in Washington, D.C.
Using instructional tools such as Chromebooks, touch-sensitive whiteboards, and Google Apps for Education, Japhet School students have technology at their fingertips. With digital citizenship guiding their judgment, students learn how to navigate safely, practice math concepts with integrated software, go on “e-field trips,” collaborate online on team projects, and turn in assignments to their teachers via the cloud. Technology excites and engages learning, and Japhet teachers embrace the capability.
Japhet School students are award-winning orators. Beginning in preschool, students develop a stage presence in all-school performances. Every student in 1st through 7th grade presents to the entire school and to their classrooms several times every year. The 8th-graders cap their public speaking practice with a 25-minute keynote about one of Japhet’s character qualities. Japhet students are awarded top honors in Optimist Oratorical Competitions.
