Wayne State to Offer Free Tuition to Detroit Residents in Fall 2020

On Oct. 23, 2019, the Detroit university introduced the Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge, which provides free tuition to high school graduates living in the city.

It’s no secret that college is incredibly expensive. Books, tuition, room and board all add up to one big financial burden for young people. But Wayne State University in Detroit is trying to make college more affordable for Detroit students with the establishment of the Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge.

This pledge, which was announced on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019, is set to go into effect during the fall 2020 semester and will apply to eligible full-time freshman that have earned both a high school diploma and admittance to the university.

“This is a tremendous day for Wayne State and for Detroit students,” WSU President M. Roy Wilson said in a press release. “This initiative aligns perfectly with many of our institutional values. Opportunity, accessibility and affordability are all pillars of the high-quality education we provide, and the Heart of Detroit Tuition Pledge delivers on all those values.”

The pledge will cover the tuition and mandatory fees that come along with attending college – and it has the potential to provide tuition assistance to the 49,276 students currently enrolled at Detroit Public Schools Community District, along with thousands of other Detroit residents.

To be eligible for the benefits provided by the pledge, students must …

  • Live in the city of Detroit and graduate from a high school (public, private, charter, parochial or home) in or after 2020
  • Join RaiseMe – a WSU partner that allows students to log achievements and activities to earn scholarships.
  • Be admitted to Wayne State as a first- and full-time freshmen in the fall of 2020 or after
  • Complete a FAFSA application by March 1, 2020
