For more than 100 years, Cranbrook Schools has offered students enriching summer experiences, hosted on its historic campus, through a variety of day camp programs for children from pre-kindergarten through high school.

The summer camp experience is an important one for children, says Weston Outlaw, the director of Cranbrook's special and summer programs.

"I think it's an extension of their youth development and there are things that camp, in general, focuses on compared to academics," he says. "Some of it is social skills, overcoming obstacles and really focusing on friendships and relationships with adults."

When it comes to camp options, Cranbrook has one to meet the needs and interests of every child, whether they are interested in a traditional camp experience (such as one with canoeing, archery and swimming) or a specialty camp option (like STEM, robotics and theatre).

Here are just a few of the day camps available to kids at Cranbrook:

STEM Camps for students in grade 3-8: This camp allows students to work with MIT-developed modules and explore everything from mobile app development to the physics behind photography.

Theatre School for students in grades 2-12: During this day camp, junior thespians can take the stage at Cranbrook's Greek Theatre. There, they will cultivate the confidence needed to perform in front of an audience, get a better understanding of theatre and experience other hands-on fun.

Kingswood Camp. During this traditional day camp, girls explore the fields, woods, rivers, lakes and gardens located on Cranbrook's 319-acre campus. Archery, canoeing and tennis are also in store, along with swimming in the natatorium, Outlaw adds.

Additional camps include Brookside Tots, Brookside, Cranbrook, Art Studio, Robotics and Youth Authors Camp. Learn more about these day camps by visiting the day camps page on Cranbrook's website.

Athletic camps are also an option for kids who are looking to be a bit more active this summer.

In addition to a multi-sport offering, sports camps include baseball, basketball, field hockey, ice hockey, soccer academy, soccer elite and volleyball. Learn more about the sports camp offerings by visiting the sports camps page on Cranbrook's website.

Camp registration is live, Outlaw says, and those interested should register now to take advantage of discounts and avoid wait lists.

Camps offered up to eight weeks from age three through high school. The camps are accredited by the American Camp Association and licensed through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Lunches and snacks are included with most camps. Transportation Service, Extended Care, After Camp Activities, and a no-fee Monthly Payment Plan are available as options.
