The graceful ballerina. The energetic jazz dancer. The shuffle-stepping tapper. It doesn't matter what kind of dance your child is interested in learning, there are plenty of opportunities available for any dancer at Eisenhower Dance Detroit.

Eisenhower Dance Detroit Ñ which is a dance school, professional performance company and nonprofit organization focused on community outreach and educational programs Ñ has been fostering a love of dance among its students for more than two decades.

"We really want to try to get everybody involved," says Meghann Hazelton, the director of Eisenhower Dance Detroit's Rochester School.

And that's exactly what they've done Ñ both inside their studio and out in the community through outreach programs. After all, Hazelton says, "Dance is for everybody."

With locations in both Rochester and Birmingham, Eisenhower Dance Detroit caters to kids beginning at age 18 months and continues to offer classes for kids, tweens, teens and even adults. Classes include mommy-and-me, creative movement, ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, tap and adult dance.

For the wee ones in your family, the mommy-and-me option is a wonderful way to introduce dancing without the stress of learning routines.

"It's not a formal dance class," Hazelton says. So if your child marches to the beat of his or her own drum, you need not worry. This tot class is less about learning new dance moves, she says. "It's just about movement in general so they can get in and learn gross motor skills."

This class is open to girls and boys. "I like it because it's not gender specific," Hazelton adds.

Older kids have plenty of dance options here, too. As your child grows, there is an opportunity for teens to get involved in the Eisenhower Dance Detroit Youth Ensemble, also known as EDDYE.

"We offer this pre-professional company for kids that aspire to be a professional dancer," she says of EDDYE, which was founded in 2016.

EDDYE is overseen and directed by one of the current professional dancers," Hazelton adds, which gives these students the unique experience of being involved in a dance company.

"We also have what we call 'student companies,' and kids who take those classes get to perform in the pre-show for the Eisenhower Dance Detroit Professional Company.

Kids who participate in EDDYE rehearse from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. In addition to their professional dance training, students in EDDYE also take part in additional performances such as Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), workshops and special outreach programs.

When it comes to the teachers at Eisenhower Dance Detroit, expect nothing short of the best. "All of our faculty have a college degree in dance, are studying to have a college degree in dance or professional experience equal to it," Hazelton says. In fact, all of the professional dancers teaching in Eisenhower Dance Detroit's company are teaching at the schools, as well.

"The professional company actually does residency work in the schools," she adds. Through the Healthy Kids program, students are taught ways to keep their bodies healthy through not only dance but nutrition, as well.

The dance school also added a unique new class this year, Hazelton says.

"We actually just launched a brand-new class called Dance for everyBody, and it's our first fully adaptive program for kids with special needs and disabilities," Hazelton says.

While dance classes are already in session, Hazelton says the studio will continue to accept new students. Enroll now and you will receive half off your first months tuition! "We offer the best dance education from the beginning."
