25,000 - That's how many acres of land your Huron-Clinton Metroparks have available to you here in southeast Michigan.

The Huron-Clinton Metroparks also have a combined 58 miles of paved hike-bike trails, over 19 miles of mountain biking trails, more than 36 miles of equestrian trails, 64+ miles of trails for cross-country skiing (Huron Meadows is a top spot for this sport as the only location in southeast Michigan to make their own snow for it!) and so much more.

With all that space, there truly is something for everyone at the Metroparks Ñ no matter the season.

"We provide an extraordinarily well maintained, safe environment for families," says Amy McMillan, Director of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks, which includes a wealth of recreational opportunities, wildlife viewing, bird watching, paddle boarding, golfing, fishing, kayaking, sledding, ice skating and so much more.

The 13 Huron-Clinton Metroparks welcome roughly 7.3 million visitors to locations across five counties. With the Clinton and Huron rivers forming the spine of the parks, they form a green belt around the Metro Detroit area. Below, peek at the list of local Metroparks and their cities:

  • Delhi Metropark, located in Ann Arbor
  • Dexter-Huron Metropark, located in Dexter
  • Hudson Mills Metropark, located in Dexter
  • Huron Meadows Metropark, located in Brighton
  • Indian Springs Metropark, located in White Lake
  • Kensington Metropark, located in Milford
  • Lake Erie Metropark, located in Brownstown
  • Lake St. Clair Metropark, located in Harrison Township
  • Lower Huron Metropark, located in Belleville
  • Oakwoods Metropark, located in Flat Rock
  • Stony Creek Metropark, located in Shelby Township
  • Willow Metropark, located in New Boston
  • Wolcott Mill Metropark, located in Ray Township

In the spring and summer, aside from a variety of events and educational interpretive programs that happen at each park, visitors can enjoy activities like swimming, biking, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, baseball and basketball. Families also can rent out spaces to have reunions or a picnic Ñ not to mention enjoy some top-notch disc golf and traditional golf.

"Our golf courses are really extraordinary. Kensington's golf course was named one of the 10 best public golf courses," McMillan says. There are also high-level courses at Stony Creek and Indian Springs. "There's something for every level of golfer and a different experience at each park."

Summer day camps are another offering at the Huron-Clinton Metroparks. You can find a day camp at a Metropark near you by visiting

During the fall, visit to watch the trees change color, enjoy hiking and biking or stop by a nature center to enjoy an interpretive program or nature walk.

"Our interpretive programs and our nature center programs are amazing," she adds. Programs are offered in the parks, but the Huron-Clinton Metroparks also has outreach programs. Representatives visit local schools to offer hundreds of programs in districts throughout the region.

The goal, McMillan says, is to plant that "seed of respect to nature and love of nature" among youth in the community.

In the winter months, in addition to cross-country skiing, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, ice fishing, ice skating, ice hockey, sledding, snowboarding and tobogganing at several of the Metroparks.

"Local families tend to have their favorite park", McMillan says, but she suggests visiting other Metroparks close to your home Ñ or even a little farther away Ñ to experience their offerings, too.

"Even if you're not an outdoor person, in the wintertime there are super cool things to do," she says.

Bring your kids to Wolcott Farm, where you can find six heritage breeds of cows, she says. All the buildings are heated, plus there are some new baby animals to meet throughout the year.

There's so much for parents and kids to explore at all 13 Huron-Clinton Metroparks.

"I think the thing that's really important is that each one of our parks has its own characteristics Ñ it has its own things that are standouts," McMillan says. "There is such an incredible experience at each Metropark."
